Variety development

It takes several years from source crossing until a new variety is approved.  Plants are specifically pollenated after labour - intensive manual castrations. The success of a crossing is checked with the help of genetic and phenotypic markers. Propagation measures provide for recombinations and variations. We then select suitable plants and sow these lines according to the desired breeding objectives.

Variety candidates are tested for several years at different sites for their yield performance. The testing sites represent the potential area of operation for the future grain and sugar beet varieties and reflect a wide range of climate and soil types. We thereby secure reliably high yields even under variable conditions. Only then are our variety candidates registered with national authorities for testing and awarding of plant variety rights.
